Sonia Sanchez wins Creeley Award

African-American poetess ['poet' in Australian English] Sonia Sanchez, who infuses her verse with musical beats and performed at the inauguration, will receive the ninth annual Robert Creeley Award in the late poet's hometown of Acton.
"I'm greatly honored to receive this award, especially as it's given in memory of our dear brother Robert (Creeley)," said Sanchez from her home in Philadelphia where she serves as poet-in-residence at Temple University. "Creeley's idea of the poem as an act of responsibility moves me deeply."

hi andrew, been enjoying your blog for a long time...just one thing, doesn't seem like you saying 'poetess'. i thought we were all just poets these days.
Whoops. Yes, I stole the text ... and didn't check for slips like that one. My apologies to all the poets of any other gender than my own. (I used to stir Dorothy Hewett by calling her that -- and she bite almost everytime. This time it was unintentional.)
i guessed that was the case. wow you must have been brave to do that to dorothy hewitt - but if anyone (aside from emily d and maybe judith w could be called a poetess) i guess she could.
