Professor Sir Geoffrey Hill

The English Faculty is saddened to learn of the death of Geoffrey Hill. Geoffrey studied English at Keble College, and went on to a distinguished career at Leeds, Cambridge, and Boston. Keble College elected him an Honorary Fellow; and he was, of course, for five years our Professor of Poetry, a role he fulfilled with immense charisma and brilliance. He was unquestionably one of the great poets and literary thinkers of his age, inimitable and irreplaceable: it was a privilege to have him a member of our Faculty.
